Olivia Smith: Why FA Cup Match Stopped 14 Minutes After Arsenal Star Was Injured

The attacker of Arsenal Olivia Smith was rushed to hospital after suffering a worrying head injury during the Adobe Women’s FA Cup on Sunday.

Smith was part of Renee Slegers’ side that started the fifth round of the FA Cup against Bristol City at the Mangata Developments Stadium in Borehamwood.

The world champions took the lead through Kim Little in the 25th minute after Bristol’s defense failed to deal with Katie McCabe’s free kick.

The Arsenal star was rushed to hospital.

However, disaster struck in the second half when Smith collided heads, resulting in a lengthy stoppage in the game. The Canadian player had a neck brace fitted and was released from the field and rushed to hospital.

The game ended up being 14 minutes overtime due to the time Smith received treatment. Slegers confirmed that Smith had been taken to hospital and hoped it was ‘not too serious’.

Who is Olivia Smith?

Smith became the first £1 million player in the women’s game when Arsenal signed her from Liverpool last summer.

The 21-year-old is Arsenal’s second top scorer in all competitions this season with eight goals.

Arsenal scored more goals through Victoria Pelova and an own goal from Katie Robinson to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.

“I’m happy with the win, I’m happy we’re moving on. I got the winning goal again. I don’t think we’re giving them much more than a few sets. Yes, it’s very important to finish the block like this. I think we’re on a seven-game winning streak, so I’m very happy. The players have done a great job this block. They’re leaving now, and I hope to continue in the next block,” said Slegers through the club’s website.

Other teams to reach the last eight include defending champions Chelsea, who needed a goal from Naomi Girma in extra time to progress at the expense of Manchester United. Current Women’s Premier League leaders Manchester City beat Sheffield United 4-0.

Other teams include Liverpool, Charlton, Brighton and Birmingham. The final position will be decided today when London City Lionesses play with Tottenham.
