Nairobi – Department The Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has released information about the death of George Olande Otobe, which occurred during protest of Linda Mwananchi in Vihiga county.

In a statement on Sunday, February 22, DCI strongly condemns the incident of mob violence that occurred on February 21, 2026, resulting in the death of Otobe, popularly known as Omundu, during a political meeting in Mbale Town.
According to the preliminary investigation, Otobe is alleged to have provoked the people around him after stabbing Hussein Hassan in the head. Bystanders attacked Otobe and beat him to death.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that Otobe is alleged to have stabbed Hussein Hassan in the head after an argument and caused bystanders to retaliate against Otobe, which resulted in his death. The knife was removed from the scene, and Otobe’s body was transported to the mortuary of the Vihiga Referral Hospital, pending an autopsy, relatives of the deceased and relatives of the deceased. George Olande Otobe for this great loss we also wish Mr. Hussein Hassan a speedy and full recovery from his injuries,” DCI said.
A postmortem examination conducted at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) revealed that Otobe died from multiple head injuries.
“An autopsy was conducted today, and the cause of death was found to be multiple injuries to the head associated with violence. Following the investigation, the body was transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital mortuary for safekeeping. The identity documents show that Otobe is a resident of Kisumu County and worked as a boda worker,” the statement said.
The DCI revealed that the investigation of the incident has begun and that those who will be found with weapons and their followers will be arrested and charged in court.
“Failure to carry out this duty contributes to the breach of public order and endangers lives. The DCI commends the officers on the ground for restraining themselves in a volatile situation, thus preventing further escalation and the possibility of loss of life. The investigation of this incident has begun in earnest, and all those who will be found guilty in the case, including involvement in crimes, including involvement in armed assaults, will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law. No one is above the law, and the DCI remains committed to maintaining rights, maintain public safety, and protect the rights of all Kenyans,” they said.
