Nymira – The Abagusii Council of Elders has appointed Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i as their spokesman for the 2027 General Election.

The event which was held at Ekerenyo Mugirango North, Nyamira County, on Monday, February 23, was attended by various leaders of the Opposition, including Rigathi GachaguaKalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and George Natembeya.
What Matiang’i said after being appointed Gusii spokesperson
In his statement on X, the former Minister of Internal Security thanked the elders for electing him to be the spokesperson of the community.
“With gratitude and determination, I accept the responsibility of serving as the spokesperson of the Gusii Community. This is more than a position – it is a call to leadership and a responsibility to unite our people under a clear agenda of representation, empowerment and development to bring about change. Together, we rise, plan, and shape our political destiny,” Matiang’i said.
Gachagua issued a statement congratulating Matiang’i on his appointment, saying it was a sign of unity in the Opposition.
How Gachagua congratulated Fred Matiang’i
The leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) said the opposition leaders have united and will support one candidate to face him William Ruto 2027.
The former deputy president said the opposition will not rely on brokers, asking Ruto to face opponents with equal political weight, not young politicians.

The Wiper leader also congratulated Matiang’i, saying his appointment shows the faith and trust the community has in him.
“I congratulate my brother, Fred Matiang’i, for being elected as the leader and spokesman of the Gusii Community. This approval is not only symbolic. It shows the trust, faith and their collective decision of the community to speak with one clear and united voice. Today, the Gusii Council of Elders has officially entrusted him with the mantle of working together with other Kenyans of sound mind, to bless them and to bless other Kenyans with similar ideas. He proves that his leadership is rooted in culture, unity and a common determination to seek justice and national renewal,” Kalonzo said.
Was Matiang’i accused of being Ruto’s puppet in the opposition?
In other news, cracks emerged in the Opposition Alliance with Kalonzo’s allies citing corruption in Matiang’i’s attempt to control the 2027 joint presidential nomination.
Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua criticized Matiang’i’s desire to use a scientific method to choose the opposition presidential candidate.
But speaking on Sunday, February 15, Wambua said that the work of the former Minister of Security to manage the opposition ended in 2022, and therefore, he has no chance to advise anyone on the method that will be used to choose the right candidate to face President William Ruto in the polls.
