The vice president visited the area to hand over land titles to hundreds of flood victims who were displaced after the disaster that occurred in May 2024 and killed more than 50 people.

Kindiki said the exercise was part of the government’s promises to help affected families relocate.

“The government stands side by side with the victims of the floods that occurred in Mai Mahiu on the night of April 29, 2024. 105 families whose houses were washed away and 56 families who were living in rental houses that were also destroyed, have been given land away from the flood channel to resettle. In addition, each family has been given financial support to buy basic construction materials to speed up new housing. The new area has been set aside as part of building schools, health centers and other services,” said the Deputy President.

While he was continuing his speech, it started to rain heavily, and one of his security officers took an umbrella and ran to protect him.

However, Kindiki refused and told him to leave, saying that it is not appropriate for him to protect himself with an umbrella while the people he is addressing continue to be rained upon.

“Give it up. If you spread an umbrella for me, what about those whom I am addressing? If the people are being rained on, let us also be rained on. This rain cannot kill anyone,” he said as the crowd cheered.

The guard folded up the umbrella and turned back, leaving his boss still in the rain.

Kindiki continued his speech regardless of the rain, occasionally leading the crowd to sing “Tutam” (two terms for President Ruto).

He was accompanied by the Minister of Lands Alice Wahome, Secretary General Nixon Korir, and County leaders Nakuru led by Governor Susan Kihika.

Kindiki has been making efforts to attract support in the Mt Kenya area to support the President William Ruto towards the 2027 election and give him a second term.

However, he faces stiff competition from his predecessor, Rigathi Gachaguawho is leading the anti-Ruto campaign in the constituency.
