Uhuru confirmed his long-standing Catholic faith by attending Ash Wednesday Mass on February 18, when millions of Christians around the world began the season of Lent.

The former leader joined the believers in the Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Nyali, Mombasa, for a solemn service that marks the beginning of 40 days of prayer, fasting, and reflection leading up to Easter.

A video shared through the official account of the Office of the Fourth President showed Uhuru silently participating in the service before joining the line to receive the traditional ashes on his head with the sign of the cross, a sign that means repentance and the end of life.
