Migori town plunged into violence as six people were shot dead after a violent dispute erupted between Migori governor Ochillo Ayacko and Suna West MP Peter Masara.

The event on the evening of Friday, February 13, further highlighted the growing tension in the county’s local politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
How did the Migori riots happen?
The incident happened in the construction area of Marindi market in Suna West central business district.
Governor Ayacko was frequently standing to address the locals when his political opponent, MP Masara, arrived with his supporters.
What started as a violent rally quickly turned into chaos, forcing police officers to intervene to restore order.
Two of the injured were rushed to the Migori County Referral Hospital, while the other four received treatment at the St Joseph Ombo Mission Hospital, where they are still recovering.
“I found myself in the middle of chaos on my way home from work. I don’t know what was going on, I felt a sharp pain in my right arm and woke up to find myself here in the hospital with a gunshot wound,” said Victor Otieno, one of the victims.
Another victim, Hesborn Oluoch, narrated the horrific incident, revealing that he had gone to buy groceries when he got stuck in the chaos.
Shot in the leg, the young man said his family had no idea he was fighting for his life, adding that they were still waiting for dinner.
“I had gone to buy dinner for my family but I was shot in the leg, until now my family does not know where I am, they still expect me to return with food but I am here fighting for my life,” he told TUKO.co.ke with tears in his eyes.
Kephar Omondo, a tipper driver, was also shot in the hand while carrying out his daily duties within the CBD.

Neither Ayacko nor Masara have spoken publicly about the incident that caused business and transportation activities throughout the city to stop for several hours.
The conflict comes amid rumors that MP Masara is eyeing the county’s top seat in the 2027 General Election, which has increased the hostility between the two leaders.
This is not the first time that the two have had a public fight, as the day before, they both attended a funeral in Oruba Ragana ward.
The incident also turned violent and led to police intervention, with reports indicating that threats were exchanged.
