Carrick has been in top form since returning to the club in his second spell as manager, going unbeaten in his first five games.

It was actually a flawless run until they struggled to beat West Ham United on Tuesday night. The Red Devils needed another late goal from Benjamin Sesko to salvage a point at the London Stadium.

Carrick have so far won two top league games against title contenders, Manchester City and Arsenal, and has also ended an eight-match winless streak against Tottenham Hotspur.

Who will Manchester United appoint as head coach?

The Manchester Evening News reports that the club want a ‘star name’ and a manager with a proven track record of success. Sky Sports further adds that Carrick is still not favorite for the job despite his unbeaten run so far.

The initial report further claims that the former manager of Chelsea Thomas Tuchel is at the top of the list and fits the type of coach he wants.

Tuchel is currently preparing to take England to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where his contract will expire at the end of the tournament.

The German is a proven winner, having led Chelsea to many trophies, including the 2021 Champions League title. He has also won many leagues in Germany and France.

Other managers who may be thrown on the hook by Manchester United

The list of managers who could take the Old Trafford seat has narrowed in recent years, with Luis Enrique expected to extend his stay at Paris Saint-Germain, while Mauricio Pochettino is no longer wanted.

Another option for the Red Devils would be to follow Chelsea’s style and bet on an unproven manager like Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner or Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.

Roberto De Zerbi is also free after being relieved of his duties as Marseille boss.

A draw against West Ham took them to 45 points, and they are away until February 23 when they travel to Everton.

Conversely, Opta’s supercomputer has now predicted who will qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Premier League has four guaranteed places, which could rise to five with England in a good position to secure an extra place in the quota levels.

Arsenal and Manchester City have already appeared to have sealed their places, leaving the remaining teams to fight for the remaining places.
