The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged Kenyans in several counties to prepare for afternoon showers and thunderstorms, even as most parts of the country will witness sunny spells.

In the daily weather report issued on Thursday, February 12, the department indicated that the forecast will continue for 24 hours starting at 3 p.m.
While the overall outlook shows mostly sunny conditions across the country, rain is expected in a few areas within the Western Highlands and Eastern Rift Valley.
The weather forecaster also warned residents in parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties to prepare for strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to 12.5 meters per second.
What kind of weather can be expected in Western Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin?
According to the forecast, counties in the Western Highlands of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley region will experience partly cloudy conditions tonight before giving way to sunny spells in the morning.
However, residents in counties such as Kakamega, PoisonousKisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homabay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia and Narok should expect rain and thunder in few places during the afternoon hours.
Kisii and Kisumu are among the areas that may record afternoon storms despite the morning weather being clear while Kisii is expected to record temperatures of 27°C during the day and 15°C at night.

The lakeside city will record highs of 30°C and lows of 19°C, with thunderstorms forecast later in the day.
Other cities in the region, including Kakamega, EldoretKitale and Nakuru, is expected to remain largely sunny throughout the afternoon, with maximum temperatures between 26°C and 29°C.
What should residents of Nairobi, Eastern Highlands, expect?
In the Eastern Highlands of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi county, residents will also experience partly cloudy skies at night, followed by sunny spells in the morning.
The department predicted that the afternoon will continue to be sunny in general, although showers may occur in a few places, especially in the higher areas.
Counties covered under this area include Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Nyandarua and Nairobi.
The capital, Nairobi, is expected to record a high of 29 degrees Celsius and a low of 16 degrees Celsius, with sunny spells expected for most of the day.
In Embu, temperatures will reach a high of 31 degrees Celsius, with a chance of rain later in the afternoon, while Nyeri is expected to experience cloudy periods after a sunny morning.

In the North West region, especially Turkana county, residents have been advised to expect strong south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots.
Lodwar is estimated to be among the hottest cities, with temperatures rising to 38°C and dropping to 26°C at night.
Similarly, in the North East region, Marsabit county will also face strong winds and sunny spells for most of the day, including Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Isiolo.
Garissa, Wajir and Mandera are expected to record maximum temperatures of 38°C, indicating continued heat in the dry and arid regions.
The South Eastern lowlands, covering the counties of Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kajiado, will see partly cloudy conditions tonight before sunny spells prevail in the afternoon.
On the Coast, counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu and Tana River will also experience periods of sunshine especially after a partly cloudy night.
Mombasa is expected to record temperatures of 33°C during the day and 25°C at night, while Lamu will witness highs of 31°C.
