The video begins with the coffin lying flat in the grave, then two men begin to adjust it so that it can place the deceased in a sitting position.
To make the coffin easier to fold, the men carefully broke some parts in the middle, then folded it neatly and placed their loved one.
While the men were doing the work, mourners could be heard singing Christian songs and those of loving farewell.
Some people wondered why the body was not rigid and did not give the men a hard time to put it in a sitting position, as with other bodies and it seems they had already dealt with that part.
A man identified as Joel Mwangi Wa Marenye said the video reminded him of when he attended a funeral in Webuye, and when they went to pick up the body, they slipped on the porridge spilled on the stairs and the body fell to the ground.
“The deceased rolled on the ground, and the women started screaming, the elders allegedly ordered 200 chickens to be cooked to reconcile the ancestors. We buried the body at 6pm, and those who repaired the coffin were given two chickens each,” he demanded.
A Bukusu elder, Job Masika, told TUKO.co.ke that burying the dead while sitting is a common practice among the Balunda people, and many other traditional people.
What did people say about the story?
James Nyagah: “People mourn in different ways; if this gives them comfort, then so be it. Just my opinion, let’s go modern, avoid tradition, and live in peace.”
