The call to remove Sifuna started several weeks before the death of the former ODM leader and former prime minister Raila Odinga due to his opposition to the arrangement of a broad-based government.

Despite the pressure, the senator remained firm and continued to remind the President William Ruto implement the agreed 10-point agenda, as well as urging him to adhere to the March 2026 deadline.

Did Ruto instigate the removal of Sifuna from the post of ODM Secretary General?

However, after his official dismissal by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday, February 11, some leaders including Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu linked the dismissal to Ruto’s previous threats.

Speaking on Citizen TV On Thursday, February 12, Nyutu recalled when Ruto warned Sifuna against attacking him.

“The removal of Sifuna has nothing to do with ODM. It is directly related to William Ruto. If you remember, during the funeral of Raila Odinga’s bodyguard, Ruto warned Sifuna against attacking him, saying, ‘You know Sifuna, I am a founding member of this ODM party, and if you continue to attack me, I will call a meeting where you will be punished.’ The meeting was called by Ruto yesterday, as he promised,” Nyutu remembered.

Nyutu expressed regret that ODM ignored Sifuna’s position on the party’s principles and instead listened to calls for his removal.

According to Nyutu, the officials who supported the removal of Sifuna “were focusing more on what the agreement between ODM and UDA was not created on.”

How did Ruto threaten Sifuna to be removed from ODM?

The President responded to the former Secretary General after asking him to respect the laws of the ODM party following the formation of a broad coalition government.

Sifuna also criticized Ruto after Butere Girls students were prevented from performing their play Echoes of War.

The President said the arrangement was created for the benefit of all Kenyans across the country and to ensure equitable development.

“A broad coalition government is not in the interests of Raila or me personally but of more than 45 million Kenyans. I have heard Sifuna speaking loudly. Sifuna, when you talk about issues that concern me, know that I am a founding member of ODM, so you need to tone it down a bit. And if you push me too much, I will call a meeting of the founding members of the party and punish you,” he said while emphasizing that ODM was not meant to remain in opposition.
