The recent statements of the Siaya senator show a big change from his previous statements in Kisumu, where suggested that ODM had no plans to run for the post of Deputy President in a possible union with Kenya First.

At the Nyota Capital fundraising event held in Kisumu on Monday, February 2, Oburu presented ODM’s participation as driven by national interests rather than personal ambitions.

He insisted that the Orange party would negotiate for its fair share without targeting the positions of the leaders in power.

He explained that the party is owned by all Kenyans, not only Luo Nyanza people, noting that it already leads important ministries such as Treasury and Energy.

Is ODM targeting the Kindiki seat?

However, speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday, February 11, Oburu insisted that his previous statements were misunderstood.

Cheered on by ODM members, the veteran politician explained that the party is indeed aiming for the position of Deputy President.

Oburu explained that he only meant that ODM has no personal problem with the current incumbent, the Deputy President Kithur Kindiki.

“There is another thing that some people misinterpreted. They said I claimed that we do not want the position of Deputy President. That position of Deputy President is exactly what we are aiming for, what we are aiming for. What I said is that we have no personal enmity with that Deputy President; personally we have no problem with him. But that position is public and will be elected if elections are held,” Oburu said, cheered by ODM members in Mombasa.

Oburu also used the opportunity to criticize the retired president Uhuru Kenyatta for what he referred to as excluding ODM in recent political plans within the Declaration.

He accused Uhuru of breaking promises to bring Raila Odinga to the presidency and pushed ODM aside in the allocation of Cabinet positions despite their lack of support.

The veteran politician accused the retired leader of trying to interfere in ODM’s internal affairs, asking him to step down.

“I would like Uhuru, who was President. He was with my brother after I was impeached but he did not give us a single cabinet seat and he lied to us that he would make Raila the president. He lied to Raila that he would make him president, yet the election was stolen under his eyes and he did nothing. Now we ask him to let us do what we want as ODM and stop interfering in ODM’s affairs,” he added.
