Shantel disappeared on Saturday, February 7, after her mother left her playing at home with her four-year-old sister.
Where was Shantel Waruguru last seen alive?
According to reports, the little girl was last seen with her 29-year-old uncle, Peter Njuguna, who had visited their home and took the four-year-old sister to the store.
However, when she returned, the sister did not find Shantel, making Njuguna the main suspect in her disappearance and death.
Three days later, the little girl’s body was found in a terrible condition, dumped in a pit toilet.
Family spokesperson Jackline Ruguru struggled to hold back tears after looking at the mutilated body.
“She’s in a terrible state. I can’t even imagine what that mother is going through. What I saw… she’s not even a child. I don’t even know what to call her,” said Jackline, her voice breaking with sadness.
Was the suspect in the Nyeri girl’s death arrested?
When Shantel went missing, her family immediately filed a report at Kiamaziki Police Station and gathered neighbors to help find her.
For two days, they searched desperately but found no sign of the little girl, until her clothes and indoor shoes were discovered in an abandoned house just a few meters from her uncle’s house.
Following the discovery of her body, angry residents took to the streets, protesting and accusing the police of failing to act quickly when the family first reported Shantel missing.
They clashed with the police after Njuguna was arrested, demanding justice for the little girl.

What did the residents of Nyeri say about the murder?
“Today, it’s Shantel. Just recently, another girl was killed. As women, we are afraid, and we keep asking ourselves where we can safely raise our daughters. Will we stop giving birth to girls because of this fear?” asked Diana Laban, a resident, her voice sad.
Another resident, Tony Nyaga, expressed his anger, saying, “It is sad that children are not even safe in their own homes anymore. Some relatives can no longer be trusted to take care of them.”
“He must have died a very painful death before he did what he did and put him in the pit toilet,” Nyaga added, shaking his head in disbelief.
Shantel’s body was transferred to the Nyeri County Referral Hospital for safekeeping while investigations into her brutal murder continue.
