In a press conference on Tuesday, February 10, Gachagua said the Opposition Coalition will have one candidate to fight the President William Ruto.

Will the opposition have a common presidential candidate?

However, the former deputy president asked Kenyans to be patient and opposition, saying they are in no hurry to name their presidential candidate.

“We are committed to having one presidential candidate to face William Ruto. We want to ask Kenyans to be patient; building a coalition is a sensitive matter. But Kenyans have clearly told us that they want one candidate to face Ruto, and we want to give them that promise,” said Gachagua.

When will the opposition name the candidate who will fly their flag?

Using the example of late Mwai Kibaki when he was named as the flag candidate of the opposition, Gachagua indicated that the Opposition Union will announce their joint candidate between March and April next year.

“There is no rush. Mwai Kibaki was named as the opposition candidate on October 14, when the election was in December, the same year. There is no rush, we can take our time, and if you ask, anything between March and April next year is enough,” he added.

The former deputy president also expressed his belief that the opposition will defeat Ruto easily in the next election.

“The original ODM is gone. The mountain is gone. We will get 70+1 votes and make him a one-term president,” he said.
