MKU Accepts A Man Who Walked 200 Kilometers To Raise Karo For 11 Years

A 27-year-old man from the county of Bometknown as Duncan Kibet, is finally seeing his big dream come true after years of emotional and financial struggles

Kibet took the National Secondary School Examination (KCSE) in 2015 but failed to join the university due to several challenges.

Why did Duncan Kibet fail to join the university?

In a Citizen TV report, he explained while shedding tears that he was committed to continuing his studies so that his younger brother could succeed.

He noted that his brother had scored high in KCSE and joined the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

“He had an A-, and everyone was very happy. Out of love, I felt my brother should come first, so I had to take menial jobs to help him meet his basic needs and wants while he was in school,” she said.

Raised by a mother, Kibet had to work to take care of their family and other siblings.

Why did Kibet travel from Bomet to Nairobi?

In a brave attempt to fulfill his dreams, the 27-year-old, made a journey of about 200 kilometers, walking from Bomet to Nairobi to raise his school fees.

This was after he received a letter to join Mount Kenya University (MKU) but he could not raise the fees.

Kibet started the journey on the morning of January 28, documenting the tiring journey on social media. It took him four days to reach Nairobi, with the support of social media users who sent him money on the way.

He explained that his intention was to raise money for school fees and, more importantly, to find someone of good will willing to sponsor his studies.

He broke down crying while recounting what he experienced during the four-day journey, including stopping drivers to ask for water because he had no money to support himself.

Did MKU sponsor Duncan Kibet’s studies?

After his story aired, MKU granted the young man an unconditional permit, thus turning his long-time dream into reality after more than a decade.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the university not only accepted him unconditionally but also promised to provide accommodation.

The institute described her desire to study as an amazing testimony to the courage, resilience, and transformative power of education.

“After an 11-year hiatus from high school and a 250km walk to raise money for his education degree, Mount Kenya University has now accepted him unconditionally and will accommodate him in MKU hostels as he completes his admission requirements,” the statement read in part.

The university also appealed to Kenyans to join hands in supporting the 27-year-old in his academic journey.

“His determination reminds us that no dream is too far when the spirit is ready,” MKU noted.
