Akinyi died at the Hospital Nakuru Level 5 after being sick at school for almost three days, allegedly without proper attendance from the school administration or nurse.

How did Brenda Akinyi’s family find out about her illness?

According to her mother, Millicent Anyango, she was informed about her daughter’s ill health by her son, who had visited the school on a different matter.

Worried about the student’s health, her friends revealed that the girl was sleeping in the dormitory as her condition worsened, prompting them to call for her immediate intervention.

Akinyi’s brother quickly informed her mother, who rushed to the institution and took her daughter to the hospital as she was allegedly bleeding from the nose.

Despite the efforts of doctors to restore his health, the fourth form student died a few hours later.

The incident sparked outrage among locals who blamed the school for negligence, claiming that Akinyi’s case was not unique.

“Did the nurse examine the student to determine what the problem was? Was the principal notified, and what actions were taken? What about the classroom teacher?” asked one resident.

They protested at the school gates, demanding accountability.

With the issue getting worse, Nakuru county education officials intervened and sent all third and fourth form students home as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.

What caused the death of Brenda Akinyi?

A few hours after the school was closed indefinitely, pathologists confirmed that Akinyi died after his brain swelled due to cerebral malaria.

“At first, we found that he was dehydrated. His body was not getting enough oxygen. In the end, what killed him was a swollen brain and difficulty breathing,” said Titus Ngulungu.

Another doctor added that the problem had occurred within a few days but would have been resolved if the medicine was given at the right time.

Meanwhile, Akinyi, the only daughter of the family, will be buried on February 14 at her home in Siaya.
