Is IEBC looking for a new CEO?
According to the commission, plans are already underway to appoint an interim replacement who will serve as the commission’s acting Executive Director and secretary as the recruitment process begins.
“This, in effect, ends his tenure at the IEBC and marks the beginning of the process of recruiting a new Executive Director and commission secretary,” the IEBC said in a statement.
The Commission emphasized that the transition will be managed in a way that will keep its central authority intact, especially since the 2027 General Election is scheduled for August, which is now less than a year away.
The IEBC noted that the interim appointment will ensure continuity and stability within the secretariat.
“This is in line with our commitment and determination to ensure a seamless transition designed to maintain momentum in the implementation of IEBC’s constitutional mandate,” the statement added.
The IEBC acknowledged that Marjan’s departure comes at a time when internal reforms are underway within the secretariat, aimed at improving systems, accountability and continuity of leadership.

When did Hussein Marjan join IEBC?
Marjan joined the IEBC in March 2022 and later headed the secretariat during a period when the commission operated without fully appointed commissioners.
The IEBC singled out this period with special praise, noting that it held the institution together until the full commission is sworn in on July 11, 2025.
On his departure, the commission wished Marjan all the best in his future endeavors and emphasized that his departure will not disrupt ongoing election activities.
The IEBC assured Kenyans and stakeholders that preparations for the by-elections and the 2027 General Elections are ongoing, stressing that the changes are aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and accountability in service delivery.
