“The first thing I was asked was to get the title deed for the Gikomba market because some people were planning to grab the land and were behind the fire problems. Expansion of the Gikomba market

Addressing the faithful in Gikomba on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the President released KSh 4 billion to expand the market into a modern facility and announced the near completion of the ongoing division of the market by April 1.

Admitting that the current construction market is too small, President Ruto announced a major expansion plan.

Plans for the new modern market are underway, with the President promising to return to commissioning the project in March or April 2026, aiming for completion within nine months.

“I want to announce that I have got KSh 3 billion to expand the Gikomba market. We will build a modern market here… So that all the traders who work on the side of the road will have a good place to run their business. Planning is ongoing and I will come here to order the start of the project around March or April. We want to complete it within nine months,” Ruto said in the church.

While addressing the resident outside the market, the president further said that the government will allocate KSh 4 billion for the construction of the market.

Why is the Gikomba Market patent so important?

President Ruto identified the lack of clear title deeds as the main source of conflicts and recurring fires that have plagued the market over the years.

He claimed that people who wanted to grab public land were the ones who caused the organized fire, causing chaos to advance their claims.

Issuing title deeds in the name of Nairobi City County is intended to “immediately deal with speculation from land grabbers” and provide a permanent and legal shield to businessmen’s business.

“Therefore, I want to tell the county assembly that I will prepare the title deed of Gikomba in the name of the county of Nairobi City. And from then on, you will protect the property on behalf of the residents of Nairobi county,” the President instructed.
