Saka had been named in the starting line-up for the Premier League clash at Elland Road on Saturday evening, as Arsenal looked to end their three-game winless run.

Gunmen were surprised last weekend by Manchester United while Matheus Cunha scored three minutes before the end of the match to give them their first defeat at home since March 2025.

What happened to Bukayo Saka?

Saka was named in Arteta’s starting line-up to face a Leeds United side that had lost just once in their last 11 games. The England international was expected to lead the attack alongside Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard.

However, he pulled a muscle during the team’s training session, forcing Arteta to make a last-minute change. Noni Madueke joined the squad while Saka was completely removed.

Mikel Arteta gives new information about Bukayo Saka’s injury.

Speaking after the game, Arteta explained what happened to Saka and why the change was important.

“In the preparation period, he was delayed a bit, he was not good to start the game, so we immediately made the decision to make the change and bring Noni,” he said via Arsenal’s website.

Madueke’s late-season call-up was an instant success as the former Chelsea star scored his first Premier League goal for Arsenal. He set up Martin Zubimendi’s first goal before forcing Karl Darlow’s own goal to give the visitors a 2-0 lead before the break.

“And he was ready, because you can’t do that in two minutes. The way he prepared, the way he waited for the opportunity, I think it paid off today because he really affected the team,” said Arteta.
