- A teacher lost his life and 14 others were injured after a Runka Sacco PSV left the road outside City Primary School in Nairobi
- Witnesses reported that the car was speeding before it hit a guard rail and overturned
- Emergency crews rushed the victims to multiple hospitals, with authorities citing brake failure as the cause of the crash.
One person died in an accident outside City Primary School in Nairobi on Saturday evening, January 31.
The deceased was a teacher who had joined his colleagues in the school for the election of the Kenya Post Primary Education Teachers Union (KUPPET).
The accident occurred when a public service vehicle owned by Runka Sacco veered off the road and hit the guard rail.
The deceased was walking when the tragedy happened.
Fourteen other people were injured in the accident.
Witnesses to the incident say a PSV passenger car was speeding when it lost control and turned, hitting the guard rail and overturning.
“The bus passed by at a high speed. I was in the Transit Hotel, then when I was passing, I just heard a sound. Two private cars in front of it saved my life,” said one witness.
An emergency response team from St John Ambulance arrived at the scene.
They were able to calm down the victims before rushing them to various hospitals in the city.
“When we arrived, we found that there were many casualties, and they had many injuries, head injuries, cut heads, and bruises. We managed to calm them down and take them to Gurnanak Hospital” said one of the St John Ambulance staff.
Authorities determined that the accident was caused by a PSV brake failure.
The injured were taken to Gunnarak, MP Shah, and Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.
