President William Ruto has announced that the Republic Day celebrations in 2026 will be held in Kisii County, which marks an important national event for the area.

The President made the announcement on Thursday, January 29, during the distribution of Nyota program funds to Kisii, Migori and Nyamira counties at the Gusii Stadium.
He said the decision aims to promote regional development and distribute national celebrations in various parts of the country.

The right to be the host was based on the request of Kisii Governor Simba Arati, who requested that the county be given the opportunity to organize the national celebrations on December 12, saying that the move will stimulate the economy of the area and accelerate the development of infrastructure and service delivery.
Earlier, Kisii had been chosen to host the 57th Power Day celebrations in 2020, but the event was canceled following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At that time, the former President Uhuru Kenyatta he addressed the nation from the State House, Nairobi, and indicated that Kisii would be considered for future national celebrations once normalcy returns.

The confirmation of Kisii as the host county comes at a time when the county government is trying to raise its profile nationally through development projects and public participation.
