The football community is in mourning following the sudden death of Wilfred Ndidi’s father, Sunday Ndidi.

The sad event comes just a few days after the captain of Nigeria participate in AFCON 2025.

What happened to Wilfred Ndidi’s father?

Sunday, a retired army officer, tragically lost his life in a road accident on Tuesday, January 27, in Umunede, Edo State, Nigeria.

He was rushed to a hospital in Agbor but was later pronounced dead by medical staff, according to a report from Nigerian media outlet Legit.ng.

Pictures seen by TUKO.co.ke showed extensive damage caused to a small black hatchback believed to be involved in the accident.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the sad news, offering condolences to Ndidi and his family.

“This is very sad. The player gave his all to the nation in the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco, where we finished with bronze medals. He had returned to Turkey with great motivation and high hopes to help his club win a silver medal this season and also help the Super Eagles reach new heights this year. We are very shocked at the moment and cannot say much, but we sincerely pray for the repose of Mr. Sunday Ndidi’s soul and we pray that God Almighty comforts our team captain, brother his, his relatives, and all he left,” the NFF statement said.

What was Ndidi’s last conversation with her father?

Ndidi used his stories of Instagramrevealing that he and his father had spoken on the morning of the fatal accident.

The Besiktas star reflected on the plans he had made with his father and how he was aiming to make him proud in his football career.

“What about the things we talked about, so we won’t talk anymore, it’s just a memory?… Even when I score my first goal for the national team, I do a papillo dance for you, but you just go like that,” he added.

Condolences have been poured out on the death of Ndidi’s father

The news caused an outpouring of condolences from around the world. Besiktas, Ndidi’s club, wrote on X:

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic death of the respected father of our player Wilfred Ndidi, Sunday Ndidi, in a tragic road accident. May God have mercy on the deceased; we send our condolences to our player Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and his loved ones.”

The Federal Road Safety Force of Nigeria later issued a statement explaining how the accident happened and what caused it.
