Mwiti’s story went viral on social media about his poor health. Worried about his welfare, the attendant of TikTokSupuu O Mioro, visited the family and started looking for help to save him.

How did Mwiti find himself at the dock?

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Mioro revealed that Mwiti was abandoned by his mother just one year after he was born. His mother has been missing for seven years.

His humble grandparents, Stella Kathure and Joseph Murungi, decided to take care of him, but the journey has been met with great challenges, including domestic violence.

Because of the poor and unsuitable environment, the boy became violent, a situation that the guardians misunderstood.

“Before the boy turned two years old, he faced several challenges. He was very aggressive and began to live like an animal. Fearing for his safety, the grandmother built him a cage. However, after a while she realized that her grandson was eating on the mud floor. So she built another one, which looks like a chicken coop surrounded by wire mesh. That is where Mwiti has been staying for seven years. His grandmother feeds him through the window of the cage,” he said.

The chief of Nduruma area, Millicent Kagendo, said that the lady, who is reported to be sane, claimed that the cage was only to protect her from getting lost or getting injured while they were doing other work, including farming.

How is Mwiti’s health?

Mioro, accompanied by other good people, took the child to a health facility, where they discovered that his challenges were due to carelessness and not any apparent medical condition.

According to him, the little boy, despite not attending any school, was very friendly and did not show any signs of violence.

“He can’t communicate using normal words, but he is able to vocalize and vocalize in attempts to communicate. He is also very active, curious, and energetic,” she explained.

According to the guardians, Mwiti has never caught any disease in seven years despite the change in weather.

Why are those who saved Mwiti looking for help?

Mwiti will be transferred to a specialist in Nairobi for evaluation before being handed over to the Shalom Children’s Home under the leadership of Father Gaciata Francis.

“Shalom Children’s Home has competent and experienced child protection professionals who are ready to provide their expertise, accommodation, care, and life skills training tailored to Mwiti’s abilities. However, it is important to note that the institution is completely dependent on good Samaritans and donors. They are unable to provide equipment to help children without external grants. Mwiti’s physical needs, including food, medical care, clothing, and related needs, must be supported by those who send him to the institution,” he said. At the same time, the visit of the local chief also led to the ‘baptism’ of the child with the Christian name, ‘Ezekiel.’

“Bibi suggested that he should be called Bartholomayo. But the chief agreed to ‘Ezekiel.’ The priest also promised to baptize him as soon as he was taken to Shalom Home,” he said.

While seeking help from Mwiti, Mioro further claimed that there are many cases in the county where children living with disabilities are often hidden.

To help Mwiti, he instructed good Samaritans to contact him at +254 722 609734.

He pointed out that despite the extreme custom, those with disabilities are served in a special way, unlike in the case of Mwiti, where he was abandoned despite the fact that the family home was not in a very poor condition.

The Mwiti case highlights the growing trend of children being abandoned in the country due to poverty or the failure of their parents.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Mosiria, Chief Citizen Involvement and Customer Service Officer in Nairobi county, received many accolades after rescuing two children from the streets.

Mosiria noted that one of the children, identified as Chris, was being used to transport them to the streets by a woman who claimed to be his mother.

He emphasized his efforts to help underprivileged children, noting that children should not live on the streets, and stressed that their welfare must be a priority.
