The incident occurred when mourners booed the PCEA pastor during the funeral of Joan Wangui, who had worked with Family Bank until his sudden death.

Wangui’s colleagues, including the managing director of the bank, attended the farewell ceremony for their deceased colleague, hoping for a calm and peaceful funeral.

However, mockery ensued when they were given an opportunity by the master of ceremonies to pay their respects.

Why did the pastor of PCEA hit the staff of Family Bank?

Phylis, Wangui’s manager at Family Bank, was the first to speak. He paid emotional tributes, noting that his loss was personal.

“We are here to mourn one of our own. His loss is very personal to me because when he joined the bank in 2015, he found me as his branch manager. We thank God for all the years we spent together,” Phylis said.

Phylis then invited the executive director to speak on behalf of the team after reading the collective tribute. However, before the General Manager (MD) could speak, the pastor intervened, saying that the PCEA church only allowed people to pay written tributes.

“In this church, we do not allow unwritten honors. That is why I have prevented Family Bank from speaking in front of the elders, so that whoever speaks can remember this,” the pastor explained.

He then emphasized the strong relationship between the church and Family Bank and wanted to respect each other. However, his statement did not go down well with the mourners, who responded by booing him.

This, in turn, seemed to anger the pastor even more, causing him to stand up and address the crowd.

How did Family Bank respond?

The Executive Director of Family Bank spoke calmly, explaining that they were only there to say goodbye to their colleague and asked permission from the church to sing a song in his honor.

Despite this, the pastor continued to make things difficult for the team. When the mourners loudly asked the bankers to sing, he stood up and taught them instead.

“Although we know who Family Bank is, this is a PCEA church. It’s just that today you see a female pastor, and you shout,” he said, his voice firm.

After some tension, the team was finally allowed to sing. However, just before leaving, the pastor stopped again and asked them to continue standing so that he could pray.

As some mourners began to leave, the pastor emphasized their presence before praying fervently.

“I wasn’t even supposed to be here today; this was meant to be the work of the elders. But because of the respect I have for this family, I chose to come. I was just explaining the rules of the church, and then you decided to shout at me. I have forgiven you all, and I want us to pray, so that God protects his servants. Just know that I have forgiven you,” he said before starting his prayer.

His prayer was about the great events of the day, asking God to guide him and accept the sacrifice he made. He noted that he had never been in such a situation before.
