Although the government ordered all secondary schools to welcome every student regardless of uniform or fees, Sebastian Onyango, from Nyakwere Comprehensive School, decided to return to his primary school because his parents could not afford the expenses.

How many marks did Sebastian Onyango get?

Onyango scored 62 in the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and got a chance to join Oriwo Boys Senior School, but he didn’t make it.

“I can’t go there because my parents can’t afford the fees. I didn’t want to see my peers, whom I defeated, carrying their bags to join secondary schools. I felt ashamed to stay at home doing nothing. So I decided to come back here again,” he said.

His teachers said they were surprised to hear that the brave boy, who was the second best student in the school and also the leader in all subjects, has returned to repeat the ninth grade.

“I was surprised to find him in the class. I felt it. He is a promising boy. I have been his class teacher for the past three years. He has tried very hard in primary school; even affording food or fees was difficult,” said his class teacher.

Another teacher said that Onyango said he took that decision to get 72 marks in this year’s exam and get a scholarship, because he is the hope of his family.

What did Sebastian Onyango ask for?

The director of the school, Jakoyo Simeon Akwiri, expressed dissatisfaction that Onyango’s poverty forced him to make that decision.

“The boy has done very well. He was even the captain of our students. His parents went to work part-time, and at 7:30 in the morning he was already in class. Our teachers were very touched,” Akwiri said.

The director consulted extensively with his teachers on how to help the boy in trouble, noting that CBE students are not allowed to repeat classes.

According to him, Onyango’s presence also made his new classmates uncomfortable.
