Newspapers have also reported on the growing tension within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
1. The Star
This newspaper has reported on the deepening division within ODM after the Governor of Siaya, James Orengoone of Raila Odinga’s long-term supporters, to come out openly to join the tribe of the party that opposes President William Ruto within the party.
Orengo on Sunday, January 23, joined a group of senior ODM leaders led by the Nairobi senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna in the service of Coast PAG Church in Kawangware, North Dagoretti, Nairobi county.
The leaders launched a fierce attack against the Ruto administration and the government-wide plan, which has been the subject of much debate within the Orange party.
In a statement with great political weight, Orengo announced his support for Sifuna, whom he described as “Super Senator, Super Secretary General,” and issued a strong warning against any efforts to remove him from office.
“I want to assure you, if anyone tries to remove Sifuna as Secretary General of the party, that will be the end of ODM,” said Orengo.
2. Daily Nation
This newspaper has reported how the plans to attack the former vice president Rigathi Gachagua organized in Nairobi.
An officer who was part of the operation said they received orders to ensure as little disruption as possible in the plan.
The officer disclosed that a force of 15 officers was formed in Nairobi on Friday, January 23, and was ordered to disrupt the service that Gachagua was to attend at the ACK Church in Witima.
The force was allegedly ordered to join about 20 youths from Nyeri, while the local police were ordered not to participate.
He said the meeting was organized by two senior officers at the Vigilance House and three leaders appointed from Mount Kenya, one of them a woman, who ordered, if possible, to injure him.
“We were allowed on Friday evening to disrupt Gachagua’s worship in the church. The local police were instructed in advance not to participate. The mission was to attack Gachagua and, if possible, injure him,” said the official.

However, there was opposition within the force as some officers clearly showed their support for the former vice president.
“Some of us were afraid of attacking the church. There were problems of trust, with some officers who openly showed support for Gachagua,” said the official.
Shortly after Gachagua arrived at the church at around 5 am yesterday, a van and a Toyota Probox, led by a police car, entered the church compound.
