Oburu Oginga Organizes Meeting with Raila Odinga’s Family Amidst ODM Disputes

Raila’s family has found itself drawn into the ongoing turmoil within the Orange party, where factional divisions have threatened its existence several months after Raila’s death.

Why the Odinga family will meet

Raila Odinga Junior revealed that the family will meet on February 1, hinting that the main agenda will be about ODM politics, although he expressed his desire to distance himself from those issues.

“I am not a politician. I love all of them and I respect them all. My uncle has arranged a family meeting on the 1st. I would like it to happen as soon as possible. I don’t know what is going on, don’t involve me in those politics,” Junior said through his X message.

Divisions within the family became evident recently when they seemed to be pulled in different directions regarding the talks that the ODM party has initiated with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Is the Odinga family divided over ODM issues?

Oburu, who is the leader of the party, seems to be leaning towards President Ruto and has announced his readiness to cooperate with the UDA towards the 2027 elections.

Although Oburu’s position was said to be that of the party, Winnie OdingaRaila Odinga Junior and Ruth Odinga came out against ODM entering into urgent negotiations.

Winnie and Raila Junior said that grassroots members should be consulted before any decision is made.

In turn, Ruth Odingawho is the Kisumu County women’s representative and Oburu’s younger sister, he warned the party against rushing into the union as if it were an emergency.

According to him, the 2027 election is still far away, and he asked Oburu to call a meeting of the National Central Committee (NEC) to allow the leadership of the party to exchange ideas and decide the best way forward.

The family has also shown solidarity with the Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Member of Parliament for Embakasi East Babu Owino, who have clearly announced their opposition to the arrangement of an integrated government.

The meeting came after President Ruto appointed Mama Ida Odinga as Kenyan ambassador and permanent representative in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Why did Ruto give Ida Odinga a government post?

If his appointment is approved by the National Assemblywill serve in the United Nations environment office in Nairobi, a position consistent with Kenya’s commitment to continue efforts to combat climate change.

According to President Ruto, Ida’s appointment highlights her long history of contribution to education, civic leadership, and the advocacy of social rights, gender equality and youth empowerment.

In addition to her public service, Mama Ida has also contributed to Kenya’s private sector, holding leadership positions in family businesses such as East African Spectre.
