The boy had been missing for about a month after running away from home in fear of being punished following the crime he had committed.
How old was the lost boy?
A Facebook user, Countryman Kabochi, told the touching story of a 13-year-old boy whose disappearance left his family heartbroken.
He explained how he met the boy on the street in Nairobi during an exercise to help people on the street, and felt moved to talk to him and learn more about his life.
“Yesterday, as is my custom while doing activities to reach people on the streets in Nairobi, I met a 13-year-old boy who had lived on the streets for about a month. At first he told me he had no parents, but I knew he was not telling the whole truth. I did not question him. I gave him time, space, and security. When he realized that I was not a threat, he pulled me aside and decided to open up.
In a trembling voice, he shared with me that his sister had beaten him because he did not fulfill the responsibility given to him. This was not the first time; it had happened before. One day, the food burned while he was playing, he knew what came next: not peace, but fear. So he decided to run,” he narrated.
Kabochi takes the boy home
The boy was sleeping in the cold and dangerous environment of the streets of Nairobi, but he explained that he was able to live thanks to the help of a man who was experienced in street life who picked him up and helped him.
The man taught him how to get food and protect him, and the boy continued to live by telling people that he had no parents.
“Today, the same man saw me from afar and yelled, ‘Pastor Dingo!’, meaning a rogue preacher. He told me the boy needed urgent help and added something that pierced my heart: the boy had not yet started using drugs. There was still hope. There was still time.
After talking to the boy, he told me about another sister we could go to. I took him there. As soon as the sister saw him, she was overcome with emotion. The situation suddenly changed. Tears flowed—of surprise, relief, joy, and healing. He cried until I found myself crying,” he continued to narrate.
