During an interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, January 21, Junet claimed some powerful forces in Kenya were ready to get Raila as president.

Why did Raila lose the 2022 presidential vote?

According to Junet, Raila’s repeated failed bids for the highest seat of the country were due to deliberate opposition from influential actors who usually shape the outcome of elections in the country.

“Remember, until Raila’s death, we were saying the ministers should be released. The people who usually make people president in Kenya did not want to make Raila president. That is what I believe, without mentioning who is who,” Junet said.

The minority leader in the National Assembly said that some people contributed significantly to the victory of Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 and 2017 they were not happy with Raila’s candidacy.

He revealed that some senior Jubilee government officials who were close to Uhuru told him openly that Raila would not defeat the then deputy president. William Ruto.

Junet suggested that the late ODM leader would have won the election if he had not relied on government support.

“The people who made others the president in 2007, 2013, and 2017 did not want to make Raila the president. I think they were not comfortable with him, maybe. They were hiding from us that they were supporting him. There were senior people in the government who told me that in the fight between Raila and Ruto, Raila would lose, but these are the people we were counting on. I wish we had conducted the election without cooperating with the government; it was just a burden we carried,” he said.

He further suggested that Raila lacked sufficient support from Mount Kenya, saying that a small increase in the number of voters there could have changed the outcome.

Junet also implicated Raila’s political allies, including the former president, for failing to fully mobilize the support of the people.

The MP wondered why Uhuru did not campaign with Raila in Mt Kenya despite supporting his presidential bid.

“I blame the people for your name. They did not vote for Baba, for your surname. If they had voted for even 500,000 more people in your name, today Baba would have died as president. His friend, the former president, did not take him to that area to tell people that this is a good man. He was campaigning for him from his seat of power, the White House,” he said.
