Can Babu Owino be given the leadership of ODM?

However, during the interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, January 21, Junet said Babu has no chance to take the leadership of the Orange party.

The Director of Elections of ODM explained that the situation within the party would not allow Babu to rise to the highest office of the party.

However, Junet admitted that Babu has a big chance to get her out Johnson as governor of Nairobi county in the 2027 General Election.

“No, Babu has a chance to become governor. He has no chance to win in NDC. No, it is impossible. I know the structure of the party. I do not favor him. No, I do not see him winning. But if he wins, he will be the leader of the party. He has enough time,” Junet said.

He said the move was necessary to maintain stability and prevent internal unrest within one of the most influential political parties in Kenya.

Comparing ODM to the country’s presidency, Junet said that the status of the party will not allow its leadership to remain without people at any time.

He emphasized that ODM’s status in national politics needs continuity, especially during the transition.

“In politics, ODM is a small government. You can’t leave ODM hanging like that. Anything can happen. ODM is not any other party; it’s not a joke. So, when a leader dies, we don’t want riots and fights here and there. So, we should stop someone who we thought could lead us through this period.

Junet further discussed the rumors about the possible merger of parties, especially suggestions that ODM could be taken over by the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

He dismissed the allegations, saying that Kenya’s current political environment favors coalition building rather than swallowing smaller parties.

According to Junet, the 2010 Constitution changed political participation in Kenya, making coalition building a preferred strategy over forced mergers.

“That is a fake opinion because how do you give yourself to another party? You don’t need to swallow any party, when Jubilee swallowed other parties, and they swallowed 14 parties before the 2017 election, now it has become a shell,” he added.
