The officer and his colleague from the Karatina Police Station, in East Mathira Sub-County, were involved in an altercation with the deceased at the Rubis petrol station a few minutes after 5pm on 18 January.

How did Peter Mwangi kill George Matheri?

According to the pictures, Matheri (who was wearing a white t-shirt and blue pants) and the officers had an argument at the entrance of the gas station, the situation got worse and made the officer attack him with kicks and punches.

Matheri left the area and went to where there was a group of people. A civilian, who appeared to be the driver, intervened to try to separate them.

However, his efforts were unsuccessful. The enraged officers continued to beat Matheri and at one point pointed a gun at him before hitting him with the butt of the gun.

Despite his efforts to leave the gas station, Mwangi and his companion continued to push him, torture him, and finally shot him.

The concerned citizen who had unsuccessfully tried to intervene ran to the spot where Matheri had fallen, only to find that he had died.

The photos captured him talking briefly with the suspects before they left the scene regardless of what happened.

Some of the witnesses who were present at the station panicked and ran to find safety.

A few minutes later, several residents including bodaboda drivers flooded the scene, which was dominated by panic and fear.

The shooting incident caused tension and chaos in Karatina, with residents reportedly blocking the Nairobi-Karatina Highway and destroying property.

Mwangi was arrested and detained for 14 days after being brought to the Nyeri Court on Tuesday, January 20.
