Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 20, the young MP noted that the efforts that Raila put in developing the party for 20 years deserve to be continued by young leaders.
He acknowledged the existence of a leadership conflict within the party, which he said could be resolved by the National Congress (NDC) intended to unite all members.
“There is a storm in ODM, and people must come together. There must be an NDC that will ensure that the storm calms down. This party must be given leadership immediately, and you have seen the leader of the party as we speak now.
We do not need to criticize anyone, but it is our time. There is nothing wrong with Moses, but it is Joshua’s time, so it is up to you to decide if you want a weak Joshua or a strong Joshua, if you want a Joshua who is the same age as Moses or older than Moses or a Joshua younger than Moses,” he said.
The Member of Parliament emphasized that his popularity has increased recently, which makes him fit to lead the party and continue Raila’s legacy.
“This is politics, we will play as long as it comes because we are the elected leaders in this country. You saw the opinion polls the other day and you interviewed well.
The votes made it clear that Babu should be the leader of the party, 33%, followed by my father, Mr. Dr. Oburu Odinga with 10%, then Gladys Wanga 7%, and others sharing 1%. So clearly, the people have said,” he said.

The area has been coming up in discussions about who should succeed Raila Odinga, who led the community for decades after succeeding his father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Raila’s death on October 15 marked the end of a long era of political leadership that extended beyond Nyanza to the whole of Kenya and the African continent as a whole.
Babu Owino’s popularity
Recent research has shown that Grandfather Owinooriginally from Kisumu County, is supported by 33 percent of Luo Nyanza voters as Raila’s successor.
He was followed by Siaya senator, Oburu Oginga (10%), Homa Bay governor, Gladys Wanga (7%), and Siaya governor, James Orengo (4%), while Energy CS, Opiyo Wandayi and Treasury officer, John Mbadi recorded 2% and 1% respectively.
The survey conducted between December 19 and 20 through Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) involved 1,000 respondents across 47 counties, with a margin of error of ±3.1% at the 95% confidence level, based on 2019 Census data.
The results of the survey came at a time when Babu is facing opposition from loyal supporters of Raila Odinga who are clinging to Oburu Oginga, a development that was seen as dangerous for his plan to run for the governorship of Nairobi under the ODM ticket.
