In many schools, when students have fee debts, it is the responsibility of their parents to pay them, but for Kilimo Girls High School in Kakamega county, the situation is different.

For four years now, the school’s teachers have been donating every day, and the donations are used to cover the fees owed by at-risk students.

How Kilimo Girls teachers help disadvantaged students

The director of the school, Rachael Okaro, told TUKO.co.ke in an exclusive interview that since 2023, teachers have been donating KSh 50 every day, which is used to pay fees for the most vulnerable students.

“This money is collected every Wednesday by the account worker from each teacher. After that we identify students in need who have fee debts, and this money is used to pay them,” said Okaro.

For the three years that this program has been implemented, it has helped 10 students, most of whom have done well in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam, obtaining grades that allow them to enter university.

The director said that last year they collected KSh 36,000, which was used to help four students who owed fees.

“The money was divided equally among four students, each getting KSh 9,000. They were all candidates, and we are happy that three of those we supported got B+,” said Okaro.

This year, the teachers plan to help four more students.

However, Okaro noted that the school has many vulnerable students who need help, but due to limited resources, only a few can benefit from this program.

How Kilimo Girls teachers identify students at risk

Since there are many students in a state of need who had joined the Agricultural Girls’ High School, teachers use specific criteria to identify those who are eligible for assistance.

“We speak directly to students and their parents or guardians during the annual general meeting, and we also conduct research that is used to select the target audience,” said the director.

“Before this, we had a case where the student had only one parent who relied on selling sukuma wiki to pay school fees and look after the family. He was not in an easy situation,” he added.

In addition to supporting at-risk students, the school has also adopted a culture of inviting cheerleaders from time to time to motivate its students.

“We have agreed with the board that since our school must be a champion, we must represent intelligent people to come and motivate the studentsonly,” he added.

Agricultural Girls High School is not only successful academically but also in sports.

Last year, one of the school’s students was named the best goalkeeper in the Western region.

“As a school, we are also proud to produce a goalkeeper who participated in under-20 games from the Western region,” said the director.
