JuthreeJanuary 19, the tragic accident involving a trailer and a 3N-TO Sacco PSV took place in Kikopey area near Gilgil.
How many people perished in the Kikopey accident?
Initial reports indicate that the accident occurred after the trailer lost control and collided head-on with a passenger tricycle that was traveling on the other side of the road.
Photos and videos viewed by TUKO.co.ke showed the tragic nature of the accident, as the trailer appeared to have been badly trampled by the PSV completely on the side of the road.

According to witnesses, the trailer crossed the road and collided with the PSV on the other side, killing nine people on the spot.
How did the Kikopey accident happen?
The impact of the collision, along with the weight of the truck, pushed the matatu off the road, and the trailer came to rest on top of the badly flattened matatu.
Citizens volunteered to start saving the situation, trying to push the heavy trailer from the top of the matatu with passengers inside.
Emergency personnel are in the area trying to save the passengers who were still stuck inside the matatu.
The accident caused heavy traffic near the Lake Oil petrol station on the Nakuru-Nairobi road.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes as emergency crews continue to clear the area.

Kenyans expressing their feelings about the horrific incident, called on the relevant authorities to do their best to reduce the number of road accidents.

Why did NTSA ban three of the four Sacco?
With the accident occurring a few hours after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended the licenses of four public transport operators following a series of road accidents recorded during the December 2025 festive season.
Following an investigation into widespread safety violations, including violations of driver ethics and speed control, the Authority has closed saccos and listed companies.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 19, NTSA announced that the Traffic Department will block any vehicles from those operators who will be found violating the suspension and warn the public against using them.
NTSA directed the suspended Saccos to remove their drivers from all driving duties and directed them to submit all vehicles with identified violations to authorized speed control vendors for performance checks.
