This rumor comes amid widespread talk of alleged bleeding within the party, following the recent departure of Juja MP George Koimburi and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba.
Mukunji, who has been a key Gachagua figure in Embu county, is currently the only member of parliament elected loyal to the DCP in Mt Kenya East counties, which also includes the politically important and popular Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.
His dominance in the group has made him the subject of intense political scrutiny, with rumors suggesting he may be exploring political alternatives.
Is Mukunji leaving DCP?
On Friday, January 16, Mukunji addressed the allegations head-on, pointing fingers at the former Trade Cabinet minister Moses Kuria by stimulating the narrative.
He emphasized that his political position is based on principles, not personal desire or solidarity with the President’s administration William Ruto.
“I want to make it clear, without bias, that Mukunji is a man of principle, and I have proven this because I have stood with the people since I was given the leadership position. When it comes to the 2024 Finance Bill, I stood firm against anything unusual because the people spoke. When it comes to the youth, I have stood firm even when the kidnappings continued, to the point that I was called a terrorist for standing with Gen Z. My stand on the political direction of the nation is not personal; it is relational. big with the people I represent,” the MP said.

He did not hesitate to criticize the government, accusing it of failing to fulfill the promises made during the campaign.
Mukunji said that he would never join the government of Kenya Firstaccusing Ruto of constantly lying to Kenyans, including his recent promise to develop Kenya into Singapore.
“I cannot support a government that fails to fulfill the promises it made. We campaigned and made many promises, but the first thing that happened was that we made life very difficult for our people. The youth have no hope, and the president himself is leading fraud against the youth. I cannot support that, and my people clearly know,” Mukunji added.
How does DCP respond to Mukunji’s alleged departure?
Mukunji added that his position reflects the voice of the people, and he is committed to taking that voice to parliament.
He accused the president of misleading the public and spreading lies, and insisted that attempts to buy his loyalty will fail because he cannot accept it.
“The money you spend trying to buy Mukunji, forget it; I have no price. My position is that of the people, and the voice of the people is what I am taking to Parliament. The second term must be earned; it is not guaranteed to anyone, and I am the last person to betray the will of the Kenyan people. Everything we say is in the language of the people,” he said.

DCP secretary general Hezon Obaga also dismissed the rumours, describing reports that the party is losing key leaders as government propaganda.
Obaga stressed that the party remains strong and loyal to Gachagua, pointing out that the recent departure of other MPs should not be interpreted as a mass exodus.
Mukunji is not the only prominent figure to be accused of instability within the DCP, with the party’s deputy leader, Cleophas Malala, also linked to leaving the party.
It is reported that Malala will address the rumors of her alleged departure in a press conference scheduled for Monday, January 19.
Did Koimburi spit on Gachagua?
Elsewhere, Koimburi announced his departure from the former vice president’s camp, signaling his intention to join Kenya Kwanza.
Koimburi described the Gachagua DCP as exploitative, claiming that it solicited money from candidates while issuing political tickets.
He claimed that the party prioritized Gachagua’s interests, leaving supporters weak, and said he was loyal despite being sidelined.
