Addressing journalists on Wednesday, January 14, Otiende set the record straight on allegations that he was planning to run against the Governor James Orengo.

He said that after consulting with his residents, he decided to defend his seat for a third term in the next election.

According to Otiende, his main goal is to maintain his level of work in terms of development and support the activities of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

“I am not running for the governorship of Siaya if that was the question, and for now – and I have said, for now – in consultation with the people of Rarieda, my whole intention is to run for the third time in Rarieda state so that we can maintain the work we started and ensure it is successful and support the activities of ODM as the deputy chairman of the national party,” Otiende said.

At the same time, the Rarieda Member of Parliament challenged ODM party leaders to strengthen the party before the 2027 elections.

According to Otiende, the leadership of the party under Oburu Oginga should discuss more than the 10-point agenda set by the late former prime minister Raila Odinga.

“We need to strengthen our membership and our activities as a party, because it was always Raila’s wish that ODM remain a strong party. And we owe it to his legacy, firstly, to continue with that plan, but secondly, to strengthen the party. And that is what I have always seen, and it remains so, that more than what Raila had discussed, we who are still alive now must discuss and plan a way forward according to a broad plan and based on a strong party,” he said.

The defending member of parliament asked the party to use internal bodies to resolve any disputes instead of attacking each other in public.

He pointed out that the party is on the right track following the Central Management Committee led by the Siaya senator, where the party agreed to start the negotiations organized by the President William Ruto.

“It is always my wish that we as a party strengthen ourselves by stopping to eat people by attacking each other and strengthen ourselves by using the party tool for meetings and discussions and finally agree on the way forward. I am very happy that, led by our party leader, Oburu Oginga, the three are coming true,” he added.
