Junet Mohamed’s fellow supporters of the United Resolution want him to be removed from the post of Minority Leader

  • The parties have accused Junet of making unwise statements that destroy the legacy of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and undermine the integrity of the coalition.

Nairobi – Union of parties under Declaration of Unity One Kenya Coalition wants the immediate resignation of the Minority Leader in the National Assembly, Junet Mohamed.

Led by the leader of the National Liberal Party, Augustus Kyalo Muli, the parties say that Junet’s continued tenure undermines the credibility of the union and disrespects the legacy of its founding leaders.

Why Azimio parties want Junet Mohamed to resign

In a statement on January 14, more than 10 parties accused Junet of making negligent and slanderous statements that tarnish the name and legacy of the former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta served the nation with honor, protected Kenya’s borders, maintained national unity, and wisely led a peaceful leadership transition. Any attempt to tarnish that record is false and an insult to millions of Kenyans,” said Muli.

Beyond the statement, the National Liberal Party and other Declaration parties pointed to unresolved issues regarding the mismanagement of agents’ funds allocated for the 2022 General Election.

They said the flaws greatly weakened grassroots activities, jeopardized election oversight, and directly contributed to the repeated failure of the coalition in its bid for the presidency.

Should Uhuru convene a meeting of the Declaration of Unity?

Blaming Junet, the parties said:

“Such behavior goes beyond the limits of incompetence and shows a pattern of internal sabotage that undermined trust at critical times. With this in mind, we call for the immediate resignation of Junet Mohamed from all Azimio leadership positions.”

They have also submitted an official request to the former President to convene a consultation session of all the parties involved in the Declaration to reshape the direction of leadership following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the departure of Martha Karuaand the expected resignation of Junet Mohamed.

The parties emphasize that the Declaration, born on March 12, 2022 on the basis of unity, reform and democratic aspirations, must now purify itself against actions and actors who work against its destiny.

They say the purpose of the session to be called by Uhuru is to fill the vacancies in the National Executive Council (NEC), restore internal discipline, and fully prepare for the 2027 General Election.

Did Junet misuse the funds of the Resolution in 2022?

Previously, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna accused Junet of misusing campaign funds provided by Uhuru during the 2022 elections.

Speaking in Murang’a, Sifuna said the Suna East Member of Parliament contributed to the failure of Azimio by allegedly failing to pay union agents.

Junet issued a strong statement denying allegations of mismanaging the funds intended for agents of Azimio in the 2022 election.

According to Junet, the former President released the money but to his brother, Muhoho Kenyatta, who then chose Patrick Mburu to manage the affairs of Azimio’s agents.
