What happened to the prisoner in Kendege Prison?

The prisoner who has been identified as 25-year-old Lawrence Oguda is serving a six-year sentence in Kendege Prison. The sentence is set to expire in 2027.

A year before his release, Oguda is now fighting for his life in hospital following what prison officials told TUKO.co.ke that it was an accident.

However, his family accused the prison of negligence. They claim that despite the seriousness of the accident, the prison officials took their relatives to the hospital just two weeks later.

The family also accused the prison of failing to inform them about the incident.

Caroline Akoth, the prisoner’s mother said she only learned about her son’s accident during an unofficial visit to the prison.

“When I made a surprise visit to the prison two weeks ago, I realized that my son was in pain. He had fresh burns and when I asked why we were not notified, I was told there were procedures to be followed,” Akoth said.

He claimed that the prison took his son to the Migori County Referral Hospital after realizing that his condition was getting worse.

But even at the hospital, Akoth claims no one took care of his son. He was later told that he had suffered 50% burns that were already infected.

The family is now looking for help to ensure their relatives get the right treatment.

“The doctors have told me that they cannot handle my son’s condition in this hospital. They want to transfer him but I don’t even have the money to pay the bills of this hospital,” the mother said.

Head of Kendege Prison Enock Mogaka confirmed that the 25-year-old inmate suffered burns at the correctional facility.

However, he denied the allegations that he did not receive prompt treatment. According to Mogaka, the prisoner was taken to the prison clinic after the incident.

“The prisoner slipped and fell with the hot porridge while he was preparing to serve other prisoners” Mogaka told TUKO.co.ke.

“He also received treatment from the prison clinic because our clinical officer said they could handle the matter,” he added.

Regarding their failure to inform the family about the accident, the official said that they involve the parents of prisoners or close relatives only when the situation or the cost of medicine is high, and personal care is also needed.

Michael Kidira, a medical specialist at the Migori County Referral Hospital, said the prisoner did not receive the immediate treatment he needed when he fell into the fire.

Kidira said the man has contracted an infection and can only be treated in the burn unit which is not available in the county centre.

“The injuries are very severe. The level of burns should be handled in the burn unit and so far in Kenya there is only one burn unit,” he said.
