AFCON 2025: Why King Mohammed VI Has Not Attended Any Match In Morocco

There are only four games left of the 52 games scheduled, but the king is yet to appear in any games so far in nine stadiums in six cities.

Instead, it is his eldest son, Prince Moulay Hassan, who has stepped in to carry out the duties of the government without his father.

Prince Moulay was present at the opening game between Morocco and Comoros, where he braved the bad weather to greet all the players in person on the field before the start of the game. He was accompanied by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and his CAF counterpart, Patrice Motsepe.

Since then, he has been a regular in the VIP area every time the Atlas Lions play alongside his sister, Princess Lalla Khadija, sometimes.

The 22-year-old is expected to attend Wednesday’s semi-final when Morocco play Nigeria in the stadium named after his uncle, Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Why King Mohammed VI of Morocco has not attended any AFCON matches

That begs the question: where is his father? Considering how AFCON as it is a major tournament and as it prepares for the 2030 World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal, many would expect the King to take a step forward.

The monarchy has not released an official statement, but revelations from his personal doctor, Professor Lahcen Belyamani, helped connect the dots about where the King has been.

As Le360 reports, the doctor revealed that the King was suffering from mechanical lumbosciatica, associated with muscle tension, but added that he was not under serious threat.

The condition requires proper treatment and adequate rest, which explains why the King has been away from the public eye.

Health problems of King Mohammed VI

The 62-year-old king has been suffering from many health problems. He was seen walking with a cane last year during a state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.

He also underwent surgery in 2024 on his left shoulder, which was the third major surgery since 2017.

The Algerian Federation files a complaint

In another report, Algeria have demanded answers following the violent incidents witnessed after their game against Nigeria in the quarter finals.

The federation said that the standard of play brought shame to the game, and criticized the Senegalese referee Issa Sy.

CAF has announced that it has opened an investigation into what happened during the game, while condemning the acts of violence.
