On Tuesday, January 13, the Kiharu member of parliament launched a free education program that would benefit 12,000 students across the constituency.
How much fees will Kiharu students pay?
Under the plan, the Kiharu MP said students in day secondary schools will pay only KSh 500 per term.
“Today we have launched this program which will reach 12,000 students in all 65 day secondary schools in Kiharu. School fees for day secondary school students will be KH 500 per term from the first term of 2026,” Nyoro announced.
Under the ambitious plan, all students will be given lunch at school every day, with pancakes served every last Friday of the month.
“All students will be given lunch in our schools on all days including Saturday. Githeri for three days and rice for three days. Chapatu will be provided for lunch every last Friday of the month,” he added.
Nyoro said KSh 50 million has been allocated for the development of additional infrastructure, with the main focus being on laboratories and computer labs.
“An additional KSh 10 million for correctional materials will be provided by Kiharu NG-CDF this financial year. KSh has been provided in previous years. More than KSh 50 million will be provided for additional infrastructure, with preference directed to laboratories. More has been provided since the program began,” said the Kiharu Member of Parliament.
He announced that KSh 900,000 will be given for the prize-giving ceremonies, while KSh 450,000 will be given to each of the two sub-counties (Murang’a East and Kahuro).
“This is to reward the best performers without parents paying for them. The best teacher who specializes in each subject in each sub-county to get a paid trip to Mombasa. This will include the previous year, as some were participating in revising KCSE when they could travel. (From the MP – as public resources do not have this clause). Headmasters from the best and most proficient schools in each ward will have a fully paid trip to Dubai. Out of 6 wards, twelve Headmasters will travel. Those who have traveled to Dubai before they can choose to travel to Malaysia,” he revealed.

Nyoro added that all students joining class 10 in 20 identified schools with low enrollment and new schools (those starting this year) will be given free uniforms.
How Nyoro first criticized the Kenyan government regarding student funding
As previously reported, Nyoro has been advocating free education in the country.
In November 2025, the lawmaker launched a scathing attack on the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and the government as a whole, accusing them of undermining free primary education and neglecting key learning sectors.
Nyoro strongly opposed the proposal to reduce government student funding for full-time secondary schools, describing the order as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘a threat to free primary education.’
