United sacked Ruben Amorim last week after just 14 months in charge of the team following a string of disappointing results and disagreements with the board.

Former midfielder Darren Fletcher was appointed on an interim basis as the club considered its options. Fletcher was in charge of both draws against Burnley before overseeing Brighton and Hove Albion’s exit from the FA Cup on Sunday.

“This is what I was asked to do, so I haven’t had any discussions beyond that. I’ve worked this week, and we’ve had to focus on the game. All discussions beyond that, I’m sure, will take place in the next few days,” he said via Manchester United’s website.

The Scot is now set to pave the way for Carrick’s appointment, according to multiple reports. The Mirror reports that Carrick beat former head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the position.

How Carrick beat Solskjaer in the race to become Man United manager

Solskjaer was very interested in returning to Old Trafford, but some big stars rejected his selection, forcing the club to satisfy Carrick.

Solskjaer and Carrick both had spells at the club, with the former manager between 2018 and 2021, first on a temporary basis after Jose Mourinho dismissal.

Carrick was then appointed in the interim role after Solskjaer was sacked in 2021, before Ralf Rangnick was appointed. Rangnick also held the post for a while before Erik ten Hag came in 2022.

Ten Hag was sacked in October 2024 with the Red Devils appointing Ruud van Nistelrooy as they completed the appointment of Amorim.

Carrick is now expected to be appointed immediately, with his first training session expected to take place on Wednesday.
