The property was removed from AFCON 2025 after losing against Senegal 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

The Eagles put up a strong fightback after being reduced to 10 men just before the break, after Yves Bissouma was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Tom Saintfiet’s team continued to fight, but Iliman Ndiaye’s goal in the first half was the difference between the two sides.

Back home in the nation’s capital Bamako, an angry mob gathered at the home of an indigenous healer identified as Karamogo Sinayogo before police intervened.

Sinayogo had collected more than 33,500 euros (KSh 5 million) from fans, promising to deliver the AFCON title to Mali.

Authorities arrested him on fraud charges.

“Fraud is punishable by law in Mali. However, arresting the man while the national team is still competing would be difficult “in the heat of the Africa Cup of Nations,” a source told AFP via L’Equipe.

They finished second in Group A after drawing all their games against Zambia, Morocco and Comoros, setting up a Round of 16 game against Tunisia.

They didn’t have luck very much in the quarter finals as Teranga Lions stopped them. Of all the teams that qualified for this year’s quarter-finals, Mali is the only one that has not won the AFCON title before.

“It was an interesting and difficult match for us because we had to play most of the game with ten players. But that does not remove the fact that my players played with confidence and played very well,” said Saintfiet after the elimination via CAF Online.

I am proud of them for the performance they showed, not only in today’s match but in all competitions. We have shown the world what we are made of. Together with my staff, we will analyze our matches and see what we can do better in the future.”
