Monica Wanjiru, a trader at Mashambani Bus Station, says her world has been turned upside down after her son, Antony Mwangi Maina, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in Thailand.
According to Nakuru Trends, Antony left Kenya on October 10, 2025, in search of better opportunities after a woman he knew promised him a job abroad.
But once he arrived in Thailand, his dream collapsed as he was arrested and charged with illegal entry and possession of a passport with a fake entry stamp, charges that Monica insists her son was unaware of.

Although each offense could have jailed him for up to five and a half years, a Thai court reduced his sentence after he pleaded guilty, leaving his family grieving and scrambling for help.
For Monica, the pain of Antony’s imprisonment comes when she is still dealing with the grief of another incident where her youngest son, Peter Kahembe, died on July 28, 2025.
A student at Nairobi Road School in Nakuru was hit by a speeding car while fleeing harassment from students at a neighboring school. His loss, he says, broke him almost completely.
“Losing Peter broke my heart. Now Antony is suffering in a foreign country where I can’t even see him. I’m so tired,” Monica said with tears in her eyes.
Now she fears that without help, her son may face his sentence alone, away from home and family support.
Monica is asking the Kenyan government, the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Bangkok, the leaders of Nakuru County, family lovers, and the Kenyan community in Thailand to help facilitate communication with her son and explore ways of support, including legal guidance or the possibility of returning home.
“I’m just a small businessman trying to survive,” he said.
