Raila, who was a major figure in Kenyan politics for more than three decades, died on Wednesday, October 15, while in India for treatment.
His death left a big gap in national politics, while leaders and citizens reflect on his long-term contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.
In an emotional statement released on Wednesday, January 7, Ruto described Raila as a national hero defined by courage, sacrifice, and undying love for Kenya.
He said the former Prime Minister was always putting the nation before personal interests and political conflicts, leaving a legacy of unity and hope.
“Today, January 7, we remember what would have been the 81st birthday of Mr. Raila Odinga, a national hero defined by courage, sacrifice, and unwavering love for Kenya. Father taught us, time and time again, that the nation must come before the self, that no desire exceeds our unity, and no victory counts more than our peace,” wrote Ruto. Ruto wrote.
The President said Raila, his partner in the broad-based labor agreement, continued to have high hopes for Kenya, recognizing its full potential.
He noted that even in political conflicts, Raila always put the stability of the nation before the political interests of the parties.

When we remember him on his birthday, we celebrate not only the person but also the continuous lessons he left us: Uniting for common interests, moving away from political discrimination, and continuing to have faith in the Kenyan dream,” added Ruto.
