His last game was a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road, leaving them sixth in the Premier League after 20 games.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that the decision was reached by United’s senior management, led by CEO Omar Berrada, following a breakdown in relations between the two sides.
Amorim was only appointed in November 2024 to replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked after a series of poor results.

In their official statement, United revealed that they reached the decision reluctantly but believed it was the best option at this time.
“Ruben Amorim has left his position as Manchester United’s Head Coach.”
“With Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League, the management of the club has reluctantly decided that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team a great opportunity to finish the Premier League at a higher level. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
What did Amorim say after the draw with Leeds United?
The decision came just hours after he attacked the club’s board, insisting that he was the manager, not the head coach.
Guys, stop that – and I noticed that you get selective information about everything. I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear. I know that my name is not Tuchel, not Conte, not Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United. And it will be like this for 18 months or until the board decides to change. So that was my point. I want to finish with that,” he said after Leeds.

Man United will name a temporary replacement to replace Amorim
Former midfielder and current under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will step into the role on a temporary basis in his debut against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday. Later, he will have a chance to play in the FA Cup against Brighton to prepare for two acid tests.
First up will be the Manchester derby at Old Trafford before traveling to London to face the league leaders Arsenal in consecutive match weeks.
