When was the last time Kivoto saw his wife?

Kivoto’s widow, Bessy Kimanzi, recalled the last moments before the brutal conflict that left her a widow at a young age.

Bessy said that her husband was at home when he received a call that someone was in distress at the police station.

She revealed that it was the last time she saw her husband, an officer who was awarded for gallantry and distinguished service during the annual Chandaria Gallantry Awards, alive.

“Yesterday he was called at 8 o’clock in the afternoon by his colleague. He was asked to go and help someone who is not calm in the police station. So he should go and help,” he said, holding back tears.

Bessy recounted that she lived her life without suspecting anything was wrong until one of her husband’s co-workers asked about her.

“Then later, I didn’t know anything that was going on until a police officer who was a colleague and who is my neighbor called me and asked me if I had any information about my husband. I met the police officers which is when I went through the people nearby that my husband had died,” Bessy said.

The young widow showed that she was overwhelmed by the situation when she wanted answers to the sudden death of her husband.

He emphasized that, like any other Kenyan, Kivoto’s case must be thoroughly investigated to ensure the family gets justice and a possible way to closure.

“I am hurt. I still have unanswered questions and my heart is heavy. I believe everyone deserves justice. Yes, so my husband should, yes,” she said.

Kivoto’s father, Solomon Kimanzi, supported the call for accountability, adding that initial reports about his death were unclear.

“I was given a lot of stories, rumors and they were right and they did not find anything right. So I ask the government to give me justice,” Kimanzi said.
