According to the publication, the United Opposition is revising its political strategy with an early focus on unity, policy transparency and institutional struggle while trying to bring the President William Ruto a credible challenge before the 2027 General Election.

With opposition leaders increasingly believing that 2026 will be an important year, the coalition is moving away from politics run by protest towards a structured, multi-layered plan based on early consolidation, disciplined messaging and a clear alternative governance vision.

The strategy is partly a response to Ruto’s repeated claims that his critics have little thought beyond sloganeering, a charge that the opposition now seems keen to tone down.

Insiders say the opposition is planning to expand its coalition, unveil a single presidential candidate early, and stage legal challenges against what they see as an executive crackdown.

These efforts will be complemented by grassroots mobilization across the country and a systematic investigation of government spending using the reports of the Auditor General and the Comptroller of the Budget to highlight allegations of excesses and corruption.

At the heart of the plan is the belief that unity cannot be postponed as leaders fear that delayed talks, which have historically fractured opposition movements, would give the incumbent a strategic advantage.

“This is not a far-fetched idea. It is important to keep all the rivals under one umbrella,” one insider said.

Talks are ongoing on a possible high-level withdrawal in early 2026 to organize key opposition figures, including those outside the formal coalition, on common rules of engagement and a common agenda.

Leaders of the opposition, among them being the former vice president Rigathi GachaguaDemocratic Party leader Justin Muturi and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, insist that the coalition will not allow Ruto to define his agenda.

“William Ruto cannot advise us on how to remove him from power and we cannot allow him to set an agenda for us. He should be very happy if we have no agenda, no understanding and no intelligence,” Gachagua said.

They argue that public frustration about the cost of living, taxes, debt and unemployment must be translated into a robust policy alternative, not just political anger.

The emerging opposition narrative describes Ruto’s administration as economically rigid and institutionally destructive, while promising a people-centric approach that internalizes economic pain in markets, hospitals and villages rather than macroeconomic statistics.

According to the newspaper, a fierce dispute over lunch between MCA for Kileleshwa Robert Alai and the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East Grandpa Owino in a posh Nairobi restaurant it almost went bad.

The newspaper reports that the incident happened at Cedars Lebanese Restaurant in Kilimani, where the two politicians arrived side by side and unexpectedly crossed paths.

Witnesses said Babu was sitting with another man for a private lunch meeting when Alai walked in, saw him, and walked straight to his table.

Sources at the restaurant told the newspaper that the dispute quickly escalated into a brawl, with Alai accusing Babu of orchestrating cyber attacks against his wife through online activist Maverick Aoko.

Aoko has in recent days posted a series of harsh and personal comments about X directed at Alai’s partner, provoking MCA’s ire.

The newspaper said that Babu, according to the witness, denied the allegations, insisting that he did not know Alai’s wife.

“Owino, in his defence, said he does not know Alai’s wife personally and has no reason to slander her,” a witness sitting at the bar told the newspaper.

What started as a verbal altercation took a horrific turn as witnesses claimed that an angry Alai pulled out a gun, fired it, and pointed it at Babu, trying to pull the trigger several times.

“Fortunately, the gun had not been fired properly and it jammed. At that time, a senior police officer who was having lunch in the same bar rushed in and took away Alai’s gun,” the newspaper quoted the source as saying.

The officer, later identified as Mohamed Amin Shurie, head of financial crimes at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), reportedly rushed in, overpowered Alai, and disarmed him.
