In his reflection on 2026, Wanga said 2025 was a difficult year for Orange following the sudden death of the former prime minister Raila Amollo Odinga.
Did Raila Odinga leave ODM in a state of uncertainty?
According to the Homa Bay governor, Raila was a moral compass and a source of morals, direction and courage for ODM supporters. “The year 2025 was the year we lost BABA. His death marked an important moment for our country and left a great sense of loss among millions who found hope, courage, and direction from his leadership. He was our moral compass and our North Star, the source from which our values, direction, and courage flowed. His absence has left a great void, but also a great responsibility to continue a legacy built on dedication, principles, and unwavering commitment to the people,” Wanga said Friday, January 2.
As we begin the year 2026, Wanga said ODM members should recommit themselves to the values that Raila taught them, including the need to value the movement for justice, social and economic prosperity, and the provision of quality services to all.
In his message, the governor of Homa Bay called for unity and focus in the Orange party before the 2027 general election.
Wanga admitted that recently the ODM party has witnessed a fierce and divisive debate but he urged the members of the party to support the mission outlined by Oburu for the year 2026.
“Within the ODM family, this is a time that requires unity, transparency, and focus. Our party leader, Dr. Oburu Oginga, has clearly stated our broad mission, and now it is our collective responsibility to support it and make 2026 a year of integration and order. Unity is not unity. In recent days, we have witnessed a heated debate and differences of opinion about the direction of the party in the post-Baba era. it is a proud and long-standing tradition of ODM,” the Homa Bay governor said.
Should the ODM party remain united before the 2027 vote?
Wanga said that the party of two decades should remain together and commit not to leave anyone behind before the 2027 elections.
“The strong and tested institutions of our party give us the ability to harmonize different perspectives and turn them into strength. Realizing that progress is only possible together and by committing to not leave anyone behind, we can make this a year in which we strengthen the vision that Baba had for this country, the people he worked hard to unite, and a party that carries the hopes of millions of Kenyans,” he said.
According to Wanga, the late former prime minister could not leave instructions to the party for every challenge, but instead left them a vision to fight whatever obstacles were on the way.
“Baba could not leave instructions for every challenge we would face after his departure. What he left us was more permanent: his vision, his values, and his way of fighting. He taught us when to fight and when to retreat without losing sight of what is really important. He taught us never to be afraid of new horizons or difficult decisions,” he added.
The Governor of Homa Bay said 2026 is the year the ODM party should rise to overcome the fear of the unknown and resist the temptation to postpone difficult elections.

Should ODM de-whip rebels?
Wanga’s unity call comes a day after Homa Bay Town MP George Kaluma called for the expulsion of ODM rebels ahead of the 2027 election.
Kaluma asked Oburu and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed to convene an urgent Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting.
According to the Homa Bay Town MP, the meeting should be used to de-whip lawmakers opposed to the broad-based government.
