Friends of Cyrus Jirongo Explain the Source of the Great Wealth of the Former Member of Parliament for Lugari

  • At his memorial mass, Cyrus Jirongo’s friends and colleagues disputed claims that his wealth was ill-gotten gains, insisting he was a successful businessman before entering politics.
  • Fred Amayo and Philip Kisia said that politics destroyed Jirongo’s fortunes instead of building them, noting his previous real estate ventures such as Hazina and Kemri Estates
  • Former Law Minister Amos Wako noted Jirongo’s unique role as an entrepreneur, saying Moi chose him for YK92 due to his proven business success.

The friends of the late Cyrus Jirongo have taken steps to challenge the allegations about how the former Lugari Member of Parliament amassed his wealth.

Over the past decade, stories about his wealth continued to make headlines, often suggesting that his wealth was amassed through illegal means.

Some reports said that Jirongo relied on his relationship with the late Daniel Moi administration to establish his multi-billion shilling wealth.

At one point, there were even allegations that a bank went bankrupt after giving him loans worth millions, which he allegedly failed to repay.

During Jirongo’s memorial mass at the CITAM church in Nairobi on Saturday, December 27, close associates of the deceased tried to address the allegations which they said were baseless.

They said that Jirongo was a serious businessman who had already built his wealth before entering politics.

Fred Amayo, a long time friend and colleague in Youth for KANU ’92, said Jirongo’s business success happened before the start of his political life.

Youth for KANU 92 was loved by the late Daniel Moi’s administration, and its members said they used their position close to power to gain benefits.

According to Amayo, politics ended up endangering him instead of helping him.

“I would like to make it clear here today, clearly in the afternoon. When I met Jirongo before starting YK92, when he was still in his early 20s to early 30s, he had already established Hazina Estate. He was building Kemri Estate. We were in the area of Saika Estate. Entering politics is what caused Jirongo to suffer like this throughout his life.” he said.

Amayo added that the negative stories about Jirongo’s wealth were lies intended to damage his reputation.

He emphasized that the late politician gave more than what he received from anyone, including his political allies and his citizens.

“Jirongo was already a successful person before entering politics. And those who spread these stories that he got his money from politics, I know for sure that when he was an MP, he did not spend a single cent from his salary as an MP. His money was sent to the people of Lugari,” he added.

His views were confirmed by the former Nairobi City Secretary, Philip Kisia, who insisted that politics destroyed rather than strengthened Jirongo’s assets.

“He was a serious businessman. He had earned millions of shillings before entering politics. If you ask, I see that politics ruined my brother Cyrus. Cyrus did not earn money from politics. Instead, he lost it. So, thank you my brother, Amayo, for that explanation,” said Kisia.

The situation was also emphasized by the former Attorney General, Amos Wako, who noted that Jirongo had knowledge of various commercial activities, especially in the real estate business.

“Before he even joined YK92, maybe because he was a great entrepreneur, Moi called him to lead YK92. He was the only person at that time, I mean an African Kenyan, who was an entrepreneur and a contractor who built estates in Nairobi.

The only other Kenyan I knew was Kenneth Matiba. So, if he had not been interfered with because he joined politics, I can say he would have come a long way, and he was there to inspire others to become entrepreneurs, also to have a bank, also to have an insurance company and so on.” said Wako.
