Jirongo died on December 13 in a car accident after his car collided head-on with a Climas bus along the Nairobi-Nakuru road.
Did Cyrus Jirongo see his wife before she died?
During the memorial mass held in Citam, one of Jirongo’s wives, Ann, who was living with him in Nairobi, narrated the events that happened before he was informed about the death of the veteran politician.
“On December 12, the day of Jamhuri Day, Cyrus called me at about 12:30 in the afternoon, and we talked for 15 minutes and 25 seconds. He called again at 2:30 in the afternoon and asked me where I was, I told him I was in the general store. He said he wanted to see me, so he drove to where I was.
When he got to the parking lot, he told me he was outside. I put the trolley aside and went out to see him. I sat in the car, we talked, then he left. He told me he was going back to the office to build his ‘castles’.
He said he was going to dream and build his palaces in the office, and later he was going to see the Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula,” he said.
According to Ann, Jirongo called her on video at four in the evening and told her that he did not even go to the office, but went home and was tired.
“When he called me, he was sitting on the chair. He told me he had been sleeping on the chair for about two hours. That was the last time I spoke to Cyrus. When he came to the supermarket, that was the last time I saw him. That night I did not sleep well.
I had a very heavy feeling. I checked my phone and it was exactly midnight. I couldn’t interpret what I was feeling, so I took a screenshot of my phone; that’s the picture of my condolences, and I could hear voices saying it was over,” he said.
How did Ann get information about Jirongo’s death?
Ann said she got a call at 9 am, and when she answered it, it was not her husband but someone else who informed her about the accident.
“I asked him where he was and if I could talk to him, they said he had an accident and he was unconscious but he was being treated by doctors. I continued to talk, then I asked my daughter Sonia to accompany me, and we started driving towards Naivasha. I also could not understand when I was told that the accident happened in Naivasha because he had no plans to travel,” he added.

She also called her husband’s friends, who followed her and her daughter to the scene of the accident.
She also contacted her husband’s doctor.
When they were informed about Jirongo’s death, they stopped the journey, cried before informing the other two wives and some children.
“It was very shocking to talk to someone and then later be told that they are no longer there,” he added.

What did DCI say about Jirongo’s death?
Elsewhere, the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) questioned the owner and occupants of a white Toyota Probox seen at CCTV cameras near the scene of the accident that caused Jirongo’s death.
The owner of the car, the Majority Leader in the County Assembly NakuruWilliam Mutai, along with the people who rented it, said they had just stopped at a gas station to fill the wiper fluid and they used the headlights for a short time to illuminate the accident scene before continuing their journey.
While the investigation continues, DCI has ruled out the possibility of criminality, concluding that the incident was a tragic road accident involving a head-on collision with a bus.
