Seven members of a family lost their lives in a tragic accident that occurred on the Masaka-Mbarara highway in Lwengo district, leaving the community in mourning during the festive season.

Police said the accident involved a silver Fuso truck and a Toyota Fielder car that was carrying the family members.

How did the Masaka-Mbarara accident happen?

According to Masaka Regional Police spokesperson, SP Twaha Kasirye, all seven deceased were in a Toyota Fielder and were returning from Kampala.

Report of Daily Monitor explains that the Fielder, which was traveling from Masaka towards Mbarara, lost direction and entered the path of oncoming vehicles, then collided head-on with the truck in front.

The identity of the deceased was hidden for a while while the police informed the next of kin, while the wreckage of the badly damaged car showed the impact of the accident.

“The passenger was fatal,” said SP Kasirye.

“Four passengers of the Toyota Fielder died instantly at the scene of the accident.”

Who died in the Masaka-Mbarara accident?

During the rescue operations, three more bodies were found inside the same vehicle, bringing the total number of casualties to seven.

Through a post on the X website, Crooze FM reported that the deceased is a man, his wife, their four children, as well as the man’s brother.

Traffic police officers rushed to the scene of the accident to ensure safety and restore the flow of vehicles on the busy road, which was stopped for a while due to the accident.

Both vehicles were towed to the police station pending inspection by the Motor Vehicle Inspector, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Masaka City Mortuary for autopsy.

What caused the Masaka-Mbarara accident?

The police have said that the accident may have been caused by careless driving, although the investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.

As the affected families continue to deal with the sudden tragedy, the police have asked drivers to be more careful on the roads.

SP Kasirye urged drivers to respect traffic laws, avoid dangerous driving, and be more careful especially during the festive season when the number of vehicles is high and the risk of accidents increases.

The tragedy is a stark reminder of how life can be lost suddenly on the road, leaving behind a great sadness that extends beyond the scene of the accident.

The driver saves the stranger’s life

Elsewhere, a routine trip home on Christmas Day turned into a life-saving operation for Hannah Ngae, who found herself in the middle of a road rescue incident on the Nairobi–Nakuru Road.

Hannah was traveling with her friend Wambui when she noticed a man lying in the middle of the road.

As he has medical training, he quickly recognized the danger, stopped the car, administered first aid and rushed him to the hospital after the ambulance failed to arrive in time.
